Smoke Detectors
Working smoke detectors may give residents or firefighters enough time to limit the amount of property damage by:
- Giving residents enough time to close doors or windows against a fire
- Providing time for a resident to extinguish the fire, if and only if:
- Everyone else is out of the building
- Firefighters are on the way
- The fire is small
- The fire is contained
- Allowing firefighters enough time to extinguish a fire before it can spread to other parts of the house
Regardless of property damage, working smoke detectors do save lives.
When the smoke detector’s alarm goes off, the NFPA recommends two options:
- Leave the house immediately while the hardwired system contacts emergency services
- Leave the house right immediately, then use a cellphone to call emergency services
No doubt, you noticed the similarity of those options. Good.
Since the 1970s, building materials for houses and belongings increasingly use plastics and other artificial materials that burner hotter, longer, and with more toxic smoke than do natural materials. This change means:
- Flames spread more quickly than they used to
- It is vital to get of the house quickly
- Flames can devour a two-story house in under five minutes
- Within three minutes, the heat where the fire started is high that just breathing will burn your lungs
- The smoke will so thick and dark that you will be unable to find the exit
