Winter Storm Warning Checklist
Winter storms bring with them a higher risk of hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, heart attacks from overexertion, and car accidents. Snowstorms, blizzards, freezing rain, ice, and high winds are all things that can knock out heat, power, and communication services. They can last a few hours or several days. SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South respond to storm damage emergencies often during the winter months, and we offer these safety tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on what to do if you are under a winter storm warning:
Winter Storm Warning
- Find shelter right away.
- Stay off roads.
- Stay indoors and dress warmly.
- Prepare for power outages.
- Use a generator outside only.
- Listen for emergency information and alerts.
- Look for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
- Check on neighbors.
It’s also a good idea to listen to weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
