Home Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Plainfield?
4/14/2021 (Permalink)
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests using fire extinguishers in-home settings when the fire is limited to a small area, like a wastebasket and the fire is not growing, and after everyone has exited the building. At SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South, we respond to fire damage emergencies day and night in the Plainfield area and know that fire extinguishers are an effective way of putting out small, contained fires in the home. Here are some safety tips from the NFPA for the proper method to operate a fire extinguisher:
- Remember the word, PASS:
- Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism
- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
- Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
The NFPA also suggests that homeowners select a multi-purpose extinguisher that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so big that it could be difficult to handle. Check with your local fire department to see if they offer hands-on fire extinguisher training.
