What about Lightning?
12/20/2023 (Permalink)
During a storm, a lot of things have the potential to cause some pretty serious damage.
Besides wind driven rain, a few other things can play a role.
Today, let’s talk lightning!
Some people think lightning never strikes the same place twice. However, lightning often strikes the same place twice, especially if it’s a tall, pointed object. Reportedly, the Empire State Building is struck nearly 25 times a year!
It is also believed that lightning only poses a threat when it is cloudy or raining. The truth is lightning often strikes more than three miles outside of a storm and has been known to travel as far as ten to fifteen miles before it even strikes the ground.
Many people are confused by the term “heat lightning” and think it only occurs as a result of a very hot summer day. The term “heat lightning” is used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away to be heard.
Lightning can be scary and has the ability to do more than just make a loud noise. Keep SERVPRO of Lockport, Lemont, and Homer Glen in mind the next time a storm comes your way!
How to Minimize Hail Damage
8/16/2023 (Permalink)
SERVPRO strives to put our customers at ease, guiding them and supporting them through the STORM emergency process while providing education and knowledge on how to best navigate the situation.
Hail storms can strike without much warning, leaving you with little time to react. Being prepared in advance and knowing what to do can help you stay safe while keeping damage to a minimum. Consider signing up for local weather alerts, which deliver warnings when hail storms are approaching your area.
How to Minimize Hail Damage
- Large hail can shatter windows. Closing the drapes, blinds or window shades can help prevent the wind from blowing broken glass into your home or buildings.
- Whenever possible, park your vehicles inside a garage or under a carport.
- Patio and lawn furniture can be dented, broken or even shattered by hail. Move these items indoors or under a covered area when not in use.
- If you have plans to replace the roof covering on your home or business, consider using impact-resistant material if you live in a hail-prone area.
Sewage Backup
7/3/2023 (Permalink)
I was in the kitchen when I heard my little daughter say “uh oh” upstairs. I discovered the upstairs toilet was overflowing, and I couldn’t get it to stop. In the short time it took the professionals from SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South to arrive, my upstairs was flooded with sewer water. The SERVPRO team explained that the water was contaminated, and they worked quickly to extract the water and decontaminate and dry the area.
Category 2: “Gray Water”
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category two water may include washing machine overflow, toilet overflow with some urine but no feces, or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category three if left untreated
Category 3: “Black Water”
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category three water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Driving In A Storm
2/22/2023 (Permalink)
Since we are entering into spring showers and severe storm weather season, here is a refresher on driving in the rain!
Did you know nearly half (47%) of all weather-related car accidents — more than 700,000 a year — are due to rain? Read below for our tips on how to drive safely in the rain.
Here are 10 tips for driving in the rain:
Step 1. Exercise caution. Engine oil and grease build-up on roads and highways over time, and when combined with precipitation, you’ve got the equivalent of an automotive Slip ‘N Slide.
Step 2. Slow down. Wet pavement causes tires to lose traction and vehicles become more difficult to handle.
Step 3. Use headlights. Always use headlights in the rain – even if it’s just a sprinkle. Headlights help you see and be seen in wet weather.
Step 4. Keep your windshield wipers in tip-top shape. Summer can wreak havoc on your blades, so get them checked before fall’s showers arrive.
Step 5. Defog your windows. Precipitation can cause your windshield to quickly fog up, so use the front and rear defrosters to maximize visibility.
Step 6. Avoid pooling water. By splashing through puddles you can impair your vision and other drivers’. Additionally, standing water often shields potholes and debris from view and it can reduce the effectiveness of your vehicle’s brakes.
Step 7. If your car begins to hydroplane, do not brake or turn the wheel abruptly as this may cause your vehicle to go into a skid or spin. Take your foot off the gas and keep the wheel straight until your car reclaims traction.
Step 8. Increase your following distance. Slick roads, wet brakes and reduced visibility can lead to collisions. Give other vehicles plenty of room and brake early with reduced force.
Step 9. Don’t use cruise control. It can cause your car to accelerate when hydroplaning and reduces driver attentiveness.
Step 10. Drive in the tracks of the car in front of you. This allows the vehicle ahead to displace any standing water that’s on the road.
By employing these safe driving techniques you can keep yourself and your passengers safe during spring drizzles and downpours. Rainy roads can be dangerous, but if we all slow down and use extra caution, rainy days might actually be a little brighter.

After The Storm
11/22/2022 (Permalink)
This past summer and heading into fall has been quite a wet and stormy one and with that comes weather related injuries and fatalities. This is why it is important to educate both you and your family about post-storm safety.
Immediately after a storm where there was heavy rain, strong damaging winds, and lightening consider the following:
- Do not let children play near storm drains. Every year children are sucked into storm drains and carried away.
- Do not touch metal objects outside, there may be power lines down on the object which energizes the object. This could be a fence, guard rail, or baseball stop.
- Do not touch or pick up any wires that you see either laying on the ground or hanging low. They may be energized or could become energized at any time.
- Do not walk in flooded basements if your power is still connected. You could become electrocuted should water make contact with an electrical source.
- If your home is out of electrical power, use extra caution when using candles for light.
- Be careful using a gas powered generator which could cause Carbon Monoxide poisoning if not vented properly.
MANAGING A STORM WITHOUT POWER
10/25/2022 (Permalink)
Managing Without Power
SERVPRO of Plainfield, Shorewood and SERVPRO of Naperville South has seen storm damage lead to power outages.
A power outage can:

- Have already set up a plan to refrigerate medicines
- For people who use power wheelchairs, have a backup battery. You may also need a manual chair
- The local power company should already know that someone in your home relies on medical devices
- Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home or business
- If travel is safe, go to another location for proper heating or cooling
- Check on your neighbors.

- Pick an easy spot to start – A contained area—like your small kitchen appliance cabinet, sporting equipment closet, or handbag shelf—is a great place to get started.
- List recent purchases – Another way to start is with recent purchases—get into the inventory habit, and then tackle your older possessions.
- Include the basic information – In general, describe each item you record, note where you bought it, the make and model, what you paid, and any other detail that might help if you need to make a claim.
- Count clothing by general category (Jeans, shirts, etc.)
- Record serial numbers
- Check coverage on big-ticket items – Jewelry, art, and collectibles may have increased value and may need special coverage separate from your standard homeowners insurance policy. While you’re making your home inventory list, check with your agent to make sure you have adequate insurance for these items before there is a loss.
- Don’t forget off-site items

What Can I Do to Stay Safe During a Tornado in Plainfield?
6/21/2022 (Permalink)
We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Will County.
Our local team in Plainfield and Naperville South responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year. Tornadoes have occurred in Will County. According to the National Weather Service, the only F5 tornado to ever strike the Chicago area happened on August 28, 1990. This tornado formed near Oswego and passed through Plainfield, Crest Hill, and Joliet, killing 29, injuring 350, and causing $165 million in damage in its 16-mile path.
Here are some tips from the American Red Cross on things you can do to stay safe during a tornado:
- Identify a safe place in your home where household members and pets will gather during a tornado: a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows
- In a high-rise building, pick a hallway in the center of the building. You may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
- In a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building. If your mobile home park has a designated shelter, make it your safe place. No mobile home - however it is configured - is safe in a tornado.
- A tornado watchmeans a tornado is possible
- A tornado warningmeans a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. Go to your safe place immediately.

SKYWARN Volunteers Monitor Storms in Will and Kendall counties.
Our local team in Plainfield and Naperville South restores storm damage – no matter how big the job is. Our fast emergency response time saves our customers money by minimizing the potential for secondary damage in many cases. Each year, The National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago looks for volunteer weather spotters to provide real-time reports on local weather conditions.
Here is some information on becoming a Storm Spotter:
Who Are Spotters?
Every community has some type of spotter network. Local fire and police personnel are often trained to observe and report severe weather, partly due to their extensive radio communication and 24-hour operations. Citizens may also be an active part of the spotter network, and all share a sense of responsibility to their neighbors. Most spotters are personally interested in weather or are amateur radio operators, but others are not either.
What is the SKYWARN Program?
SKYWARN storm spotters report hazardous weather to the NWS, which aids the warning process. NWS meteorologists train volunteers to identify and describe severe local storms, including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods. For more information about the SKYWARN Spotter program of the NWS, visit http://www.weather.gov/skywarn/.

Flooding happens in Plainfield.
Plainfield is no stranger to flooding and storm damage. Last year, SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South responded to many storm damage emergencies. The Village of Plainfield website states that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is moving forward with efforts to update floodplain maps in Will County that determine what properties in the floodplain will require flood insurance and will have limitations on what can be constructed or reconstructed.
Here is some information from FEMA on some things you can do to prepare for a flood:
Know Your Risk for Floods
Visit FEMA's Flood Map Service Center to know types of flood risk in your area. Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
Purchase Flood Insurance
Purchase or renew a flood insurance policy. Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flooding. It typically takes up to 30 days for a policy to go into effect so the time to buy is well before a disaster. Get flood coverage under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South has been responding to storm damage emergencies in the Naperville area for years, and we know that having a fast response time is critical to minimizing further damage to your home or commercial business.
Spring is here and that means rising water levels in the DuPage River, which may pose possible flooding conditions for downtown Naperville in May. The City of Naperville website offers some great tips on how residents can help prevent roadway flooding:
Keep it clear.
- Many stormwater blockages in streets occur due to clogged storm sewer inlets and drains. If there is an inlet in the street adjacent to your home, please keep this drain clear of all obstructions like leaves, grass, and debris.
- Debris at storm sewer inlets also builds up after a storm event, which is a good time to check the inlet to make sure that the system will work well in the next storm
- If you see a clogged storm sewer inlet in the City, or cannot clear the debris yourself, please call 630-420-6095 to report the location

Beat the Summer Heat with these Safety Tips
8/4/2020 (Permalink)
Follow these Safety Tips to stay cool & hydrated this summer.
As we approach the middle of summer in the Chicagoland area extreme temperatures continue to rise, be ready to battle the summer heat by following these tips from the CDC:
Stay Cool:
- Wear appropriate clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Stay cool indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go somewhere that does, even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
- Plan outdoor activities carefully: Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it is coolest, like morning and evening hours.
- Pace yourself: Start slowly and pick up the pace gradually.
- Wear sunscreen: If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
- Avoid cooking hot meals: They add heat to your body!
Stay Hydrated:
- Drink plenty of fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.
- Replace salt and minerals: Sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
- Keep your pets hydrated: Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets.
